We aim to provide practical and emotional care to every person in Northland receiving a mate ūtaetae/ breast cancer diagnosis, their whānau and friends.
We provide specially trained volunteers who have themselves recovered from Breast Cancer. It’s an opportunity to speak with others who have been in a similar position. Offering practical and emotional support, encouragement, and a shoulder to cry on. We supply information on relevant services you may need.
Breast Cancer Support Northland has supported thousands of Te Tai Tokerau women for over 40 years. In 1980, Betty Morgan formed a Breast Cancer support group in Whangarei. In 2007 this became the Breast Cancer Support Northland (Charitable) Trust. Betty passed away in May 2024 at the age of 97.
We provide help from south-east of Mangawhai across to the Kaipara Harbour and all the way up to Cape Rēinga. Working on the basis of utilising mate ūtaetae survivors to support those newly diagnosed. Providing emotional support and a range of practical support and information. We help approximately 40 newly diagnosed wahine each year, and provide ongoing support for many years after. There is confidential, one-on-one, or group support available to all cultures in our region.
Our aim is that every person in Northland diagnosed with Breast Cancer receives the manaaki they need. Ensuring those with a breast cancer diagnosis are not socially isolated, but are connected and engaged.
When a person is first diagnosed with Breast Cancer, one of our specially trained kaitūao / volunteers will contact them and support them through their journey.
You can join us at our fortnightly coffee mornings, we will treat you to a free coffee on your first visit and a slice of cake if you visit us around your birthday. Our Facebook page has all our up-to-date happenings and information specifically for those who have or have had a breast cancer diagnosis to connect and support each other. All of our Breast Cancer Support Northland trustees are volunteers who enhance the wellbeing, safety and quality of life for those with a breast cancer diagnosis and their whānau.
We rely upon you the Northland community for sponsorship and fundraising, We do not receive funding from Government, NZ Breast Cancer Foundation or the Cancer Society. The manaaki of our amazing Principle Sponsors make life easier for Te Tai Tokerau based New Zealanders living with Breast Cancer.
